Health and wellbeing of working children in Ecuador

Throughout Ecuador, the health and wellbeing of children living in poverty is a critical concern. Many of the children – particularly from indigenous families – have to work to help support their families. These kids face various risks and challenges associated with the work they do – especially those working in hazardous environments like mining and construction.

For the children Via Ninos supports, the main challenge is neglect and abuse.

What issues do working children face?

Health

  1. Physical health: Many children work in environments that aren’t suitable for them and lead to accidents.
  2. Mental health: The stress of balancing work and education, lack of playtime, plus exposure to violence or exploitation can lead to mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.

Nutrition and living conditions

  1. Neglect: Many children live in dysfunctional households, where they are left to their own devices. They are not even taught basic hygiene lessons to keep themselves clean or to brush their teeth.
  2. Malnutrition: Working children often lack access to proper nutrition, which can cause illness and affect their growth, development, and overall health.
  3. Living conditions: Many live in impoverished conditions, which can exacerbate health problems and limit access to healthcare services.

Access to healthcare

  1. Limited access: Many working children, particularly in rural areas, have limited access to healthcare facilities, which can hinder their ability to receive necessary medical attention.
  2. Preventive care: There is often a lack of awareness regarding the importance of preventive care, such as vaccinations and regular health check-ups.

Education and Development

  1. Impact on education: Work obligations can interfere with school attendance and performance, limiting educational opportunities and future prospects.
  2. Skill development: While some children may acquire skills through work, the lack of formal education restricts their ability to develop critical thinking and higher-level skills.

Improving children’s wellbeing

Both of our partner organisations work with the children and their families to raise awareness of basic health, hygiene and development needs. They also help children to develop social and emotional skills, all aiming to improve wellbeing. This includes:

  • Teaching young children to wash their hands and face
  • Teaching children to clean their teeth – CENIT runs a regular dental surgery for children with problem teeth
  • Creating opportunities to play and improve motor skills that are vital for children’s development
  • Acting as positive role models to mentor and support children through their challenges
  • Feeding children – CENIT provides a hot meal for their students, frequently the only hot meal or even big meal they will get during the day
